Borhani Drink

If you’re looking to elevate your next meal with a unique and flavorful drink, borhani is just the thing! This traditional Bangladeshi spiced yogurt drink is a delicious blend of tangy yogurt, aromatic herbs, and warm spices. Often served at celebratory feasts, borhani is refreshing yet full of bold flavors, with ingredients like roasted cumin, black salt, and fresh mint adding depth and complexity.

Borhani Recipe:

Ingredients (serves 2) :

  • 1 cup plain yogurt
  • 1 cup cold water
  • 3 tbsp fresh mint leaves (packed for strong flavor)
  • 3 tbsp fresh coriander leaves (cilantro, packed)
  • 1 Thai chili (or more for extra heat, sliced thinly to release flavor)
  • 1/4 tsp mustard powder (grounded yellow mustard seeds)
  • 1/2 tsp cumin powder (roast whole cumin seeds and grind for the best flavor)
  • 1/4 tsp black salt
  • 1/4 tsp white pepper powder
  • 1/4 tsp ground fennel seeds
  • 1/4 tsp ground coriander
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp sugar (optional, to balance the strong spices)
  • 1/2 lemon, juiced (adjust to make it tangy)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare: Toast the cumin, ground fennel seeds, mustard powder. Then combine the black salt, salt, white pepper and set aside. To intensify the flavors, blend the mint, coriander leaves, and Thai chili with water.
  2. Blend: In a blender, combine yogurt, mint and coriander water, spices, and lemon juice. Blend until completely smooth.
  3. Taste and Adjust: Taste the borhani and adjust as needed to amplify the flavors. You can add more roasted cumin for smokiness, black salt for complexity, or an extra squeeze of lemon for a tangier finish.
  4. Serve: Pour into glasses, garnish with mint leaves, and serve chilled.
