Masala Street Tacos Recipe:
Ingredients (serves 3) :
- 450 – 500g minced beef
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 1 tomato, chopped
- 1 avocado, sliced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tbsp ginger, grated
- 1 tsp turmeric powder
- 1 tsp ground cumin
- 1 tsp ground coriander
- 1/2 tsp garam masala (or adjust to taste)
- 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon
- Pinch of ground cloves
- 1/4-1/2 tsp red chili powder
- Salt and black pepper, to taste
- 2 tbsp oil, for cooking
- Splash of water or chicken stock
- Fresh cilantro or mint, chopped, for garnish
Mint Raita Ingredients:
- 1 cup plain yogurt (Greek or regular)
- 1/4 cup fresh mint leaves, finely chopped
- 1/4 cup cucumber, finely diced (optional, for texture)
- Salt, to taste
- 1 tsp lemon juice (optional, for a hint of tang)
Instructions:
- Make the Spiced Beef Filling: Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the chopped onions and cook until softened and translucent, about 3-4 minutes. Add garlic and ginger to the skillet, cooking until fragrant (1-2 minutes). Toast the spices: Sprinkle in the turmeric, cumin, coriander, cinnamon and chili powder.. Stir for about 1 minute, allowing the spices to release their essential oils and deepen in flavor. Add the minced beef to the skillet, breaking it up with a spoon. Cook until browned and fully cooked through. Season with garam masala along with salt and black pepper to taste. Stir well to coat the beef evenly. Remove from heat and set aside for now.
- Prepare the Mint Raita: In a small bowl, combine the yogurt, chopped mint, cucumber (if using), and salt. Stir in lemon juice for a hint of acidity (optional). Mix until well combined, adjusting salt to taste.
- Assemble the Tacos: Warm the taco shell briefly in a pan or directly over an open flame until soft and pliable. Spoon the spiced beef onto each taco. Add some tomatoes and avocado. Top with mint raita, adding as much as desired. Garnish with extra fresh mint or cilantro, and serve with a wedge of lemon for added brightness.
